Michigan State basketball ‘two-guard’ position is coach Tom Izzo’s No. 1 concern
EAST LANSING — Michigan State looked impressive in most every fashion in its 101-46 victory over St. Cloud State in Friday’s exhibition.
But the Spartans didn’t look impressive at every position, and coach Tom Izzo made no attempt to hide his concern.
“The biggest problem is our two guard, I’m not worried about it offensively as much as defensively,” Izzo said. “I was just disappointed to be honest with you.”
Michigan State has three players vying for the position vacated by first-round NBA draft pick Gary Harris, but only one is completely healthy.
Freshman Javon Bess has a broken foot and is expected to be out until late December, while junior transfer Bryn Forbes has a broken bone in his left (non-shooting) hand.
Sophomore Alvin Ellis is healthy, but according to Izzo, too “casual” in his style of play on defense.
“Alvin is a better defender and better with the ball and is just kind of playing casually to me, and I’m struggling there,” Izzo said. “Hopefully he’s ready to work, because we’re going to put some work in.” - Read more at MLive.com
