The Spartans won win any championship this year: The Big Ten East, Big Ten — and obviously national — title hopes all went poof in a 49-37 home loss to Ohio State. The best-case scenario for MSU, which fell to No. 12 in the polls, is to land in a College Football Playoff non-semifinal bowl (Orange, Fiesta, Cotton or Peach).

“Great” does not apply to this defense: That was the suspicion after MSU lost 46-27 at Oregon, but there were signs of progress and potential in a win over Nebraska and its potent offense. The Buckeyes beat the Spartans up front and exploited a secondary that simply hasn’t been able to make up for its losses. - Read more at Freep.com
