Rexrode: MSU gets reality check on national title dream

EAST LANSING – National media types packed the Spartan Stadium press box Saturday night (in possibly related news, the snack bar was all out of the salted soft pretzels by the second quarter), and one of those types had an interesting comment around 1:30 a.m., as others tapped away on Ohio State’s stunning 49-37 win over Michigan State.

“They thought they were something different,” the anonymous scribe said of the Spartans, and that certainly applies to this season’s team — which, like most of those in that press box, expected a very different result in the Big Ten’s showcase game.

But he was talking more about this MSU program, creeping as it has under Mark Dantonio into that national conversation, getting smacked with the reality that (in his words), “they’re probably not going to win a national title under Dantonio.” - Read more at Freep.com
