Up to the Minute:

Michigan Football needs a John Beilein

Again for the upteenth time, it became clear to me that the University of Michigan has to figure out how to land a “John Beilein” caliber coach to head its football program after the season is over and Brady Hoke is dismissed. Beilein continues to “A-Maize” me how he identifies and develops lower echelon recruits and turns them into NBA first round draft choices.

We saw it last night when Michigan battled No. 14 Villanova – overcoming 10 scoreless minutes – and dropped a nail-biter setback which saw the Wolverines have a Zak Irvin dunk attempt for the lead with 7 seconds rejected in an eventual 5 point setback.

Caris LeVert (16 points), Derrick Walton Jr (10 points) and Irvin (11 points) are just three examples of many on the current team of his players continuing to improve. The fact he has also incorporated first year players Ricky Doyle and Kameron Chatman so early into the “relevant” category is impressive as well.

Indeed, a frustrating loss for Michigan against the Wildcats, but it is one they can definitely build on. And it is obvious to me that Beilein’s teams will always play hard, defend well, and will always have kids improving year to year and throughout the season. And that is precisely what has been missing from the Michigan football program under Brady Hoke.
