Up to the Minute:

MSU fans burned out on the “Messiah Returning” coverage — Jim Harbaugh

I have a friend of mine (Spartan grad/bantering counterpart) who declared to me this morning in a text message: “If someone had told me that I’d be doing a media blackout while MSU is one day from the Cotton Bowl and a Top 5 finish while Michigan is home for the holidays, I’d have said he was crazy.” He is that burned out on the endless “Harbaugh — the Messiah has returned” — chatter.

And you know what? – I totally get that. If I was a Spartan fan, and I had to dial up ESPN’s wall to wall coverage of the Jim Harbaugh hiring – including national analysts breaking it down for long segments on the floor of the SuperDome Sugar Bowl/CFP venue – well, that would piss me off beyond words. I know the “larger than life” brand Harbaugh brings is tough to stomach for Michigan State fans & alums. But all I can say this — “get used to it.” Because yes indeed – “Jimmy has come home” – and it will make immediate positive impact.

You gotta understand something – for people like me, 5-decade Michigan fan & alum – these past seven years in this Michigan-MSU rivalry thing that I embrace – well, been PURE HELL for the most part. But with the Harbaugh hiring – you know what it gives us? Gives us “Hope” – that’s all you want when it comes to your college football program you are so passionate about.

I am not foolish enough to declare Michigan State football is going to experience any rapid down-turn – they got too much going for it. But I am smart enough/confident enough to declare that Michigan football is indeed on its way back. And with it, a potential Alabama-Auburn intensity level. And that’s when the “real fun” begins!!
