Up to the Minute:

Around The NFL: Thursday 3/5/15

Every morning I will have a ‘presser’ called ‘Around The NFL’ where I’ll update you on the latest headlines going around the league. Now of course, with it being 11 AM more news will file in throughout the day, so be sure to follow me on twitter @Jay_NFL for more NFL News.

Let’s begin;

  • Veteran defensive tackle Darnell Dockett has signed a two-year deal with the 49ers, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus. According to Rosenhaus, Dockett’s contract in San Francisco has a value of $7.5 million over two years. He’s due to make $4 million in 2015, with half of that guaranteed.
  • Titans taking a look at former Falcons wideout Harry Douglas. Douglas has a tie with Titans tight ends coach Mike Mularkey, from his days as the Falcons offensive coordinator. The Titans have also kicked the tires on other wideouts who were cut recently, including Ted Ginn Jr. and Jacoby Jones, so they’re obviously in the market for some help there.
  • Wilfork has announced that the team told him Tuesday the his option for 2015 won’t be picked up and released this statement below on twitter:

  • Reports: Cary Williams to visit Seahawks. The Seahawks’ interest in Williams comes with cornerback Byron Maxwell set to test free agency next week. Maxwell is expected to have a strong market.
  • Saints rework Jairus Byrd’s contract to create cap space after releasing running back Pierre Thomas and shopping linebacker Curtis Lofton in a trade and their cap-related maneuvering will continue with a restructured deal for safety Jairus Byrd. The Saints coming into this offseason had the worst cap situation in the NFL, estimated to be a little over $20 million over the (at the time) projected cap number. One things for sure more cuts will be coming, no one is safe in New Orleans.

  • The Patriots might have to get creative to keep their secondary intact. Mainly with how they want to approach retaining McCourty, who will be highly touted throughout the league. Even though he can probably get more money else where, I believe the Patriots and McCourty are working on deal right now to keep him in New England.
  • The Chiefs have questions about how to fix the WR position, but one answer seems impossible to avoid, the Chiefs must release Dwayne Bowe. It is time for Andy Reid to upgrade the position, either draft or free agency. There is plenty of depth at the receiver position in this offseason for them to make a move. Brandon Marshall could be getting released here within the coming weeks from Chicago, there is Jacoby Jones, Randall Cobb, Jeremy Maclin, Denarius Moore, Michael Crabtree. The move is Reids court…
  • The Bears need a major overhaul on special teams. After losing a returner like Devin Hester, who in my mind will be a sure fire Hall of Famer’ when it’s all said done, the need to find that explosive returner is ever so important. The Chicago Bears win, and win good when all three phases are clicking. That’s the Bears way, ‘play just good enough on offense to score enough points, play smash-mouth defense and force at least 3-turnovers to pick up the slack that the offense generated, and utilize special teams to score points and establish great starting field position.’ With Jacoby Jones, they can do just that. I’d expect the Bears to be highly active in finding that next explosive returner.
