Hollis: MSU will compensate its athletes competitively

EAST LANSING – The idea is to account for some of the costs an athletic scholarship doesn’t cover — one of several moves NCAA members are making amid lawsuits and increased scrutiny of a model that has made a millionaire of every major football coach while compensation for athletes stays the same.

That’s why the “cost of attendance” (COA) stipend was passed in January by the schools of the power five conferences (Big Ten, ACC, Big 12, SEC, Pac 12), and it was said at the time to mean about $2,000 to $4,000 per year more to each scholarship athlete. Schools will have their COA figures in time for Aug. 1, when the legislation goes into effect. - Read more at Freep.com
