MSU’s offense: Spartans have freedom in each possession

EAST LANSING – As Dwayne Stephens clicks through the play in his office at Michigan State’s Berkowitz Basketball Complex, he can envision the Spartans running it when he was a junior in 1992.

Point guard Lourawls (Tum Tum) Nairn gives the ball to power forward Branden Dawson near the top of the key — back then, it was Mark Montgomery dropping it off to Stephens. Then Bryn Forbes, who is technically the small forward on the play, makes a backdoor cut, the first option on the play and Dawson’s first read.
