At Navy, Valentine’s grandfather finally sees him play

EAST LANSING — Eugene Valentine planned all along to see his grandson, Denzel, play basketball in person this season for the first time ever — on Jan. 17 at Maryland, conveniently not too far from his home in Washington, D.C.

His Michigan State basketball schedule research stopped as soon as he found the date.

“It’s funny, I knew that they would be here to play the University of Maryland in January,” said Eugene, 74. “I saw the schedule, but I never thought about going down the schedule to see if he played anybody else in this area. I didn’t know until (my son) Carlton called me and told me they would be playing (this weekend). When he told me that, I couldn’t wait.” - Read more at Freep.com
