Michigan State not overlooking Navy in hoops opener

EAST LANSING –Navy’s recent history suggests the Midshipmen will need to play well above the norm to beat Michigan State tonight — Ed DeChellis’ team is coming off a 9-21 season and has won 20 games in his three seasons.

But then, MSU also has recent history to overcome. The Spartans have had their share of November disappointments over the years, including the last two times they opened the season in an event to honor the armed services.

“I don’t think we talk about that,” MSU junior guard Denzel Valentine said of bucking that history. “It’s a new year, new team. So I don’t even want to bring it up. Just see how it goes with us now and we just change that rep.” - Read more at Freep.com
