5 things to watch: A loss to Rutgers on Senior Day would spoil Michigan State’s season

EAST LANSING — Michigan State’s seniors will take to their home turf at Spartan Stadium one final time at noon Saturday in a football game that might not be as easy as it appears on the surface.

Rutgers, once regarded as one of the worst programs in college football, has proven it will not be a pushover in the Big Ten with a 26-24 win over Michigan earlier this season and a 45-23 victory over Indiana last Saturday.

Scarlet Knights coach Kyle Flood has familiarity with Mark Dantonio from the coaches’ Big East days when Dantonio was at Cincinnati.

The No. 10-ranked Spartans (8-2, 5-1 Big Ten) are closing in on a high-profile selection committee bowl provided they take care of business against Rutgers (6-4, 2-4) on Saturday and close the season with a win at Penn State on Nov. 29.
