There was one big problem with the three-point shot Michigan State junior center Matt Costello took in last week’s 81-71 loss to Duke in Indianapolis — that he hesitated to take it.

“I didn’t hear a thing,” Costello said of the bench reaction to the first three-point try of his career. “All I heard was, ‘Be ready to shoot right away.’ ”

Then he heard more from his father, Mike, after the team flight back to Lansing that night.

“I mean, we stayed up for like 2 hours, way too late talking about stuff,” Costello said. “And he was like, ‘I know you’re not the focal part of the offense, but when you get the opportunity, you’ve got to attack. If you don’t, people sag off you, it’s four-on-five, and it doesn’t work.’ ” - Read more at Freep.com
