Hey Joe: Mailbag gauges MSU’s future at corner, coach

You might have noticed something about Tony Lippett’s day at cornerback Saturday — he looked like a better cornerback than when he played the position full time, getting five starts, as a redshirt freshman in 2011.

Asked about that Sunday night, coach Mark Dantonio said that Lippett simply is a more confident football player now, which makes sense. I think improved upper-body strength has been a big part of his 1,000-yard senior season as a receiver, and he used it to his advantage on defense against Rutgers.

So to answer a tweeted question from @Simancas_MSU13, I see Lippett’s NFL future at receiver. I’m not sure whether the time at corner late in the season will help him at all. But in a pinch, his feet and size probably would allow him to play on that side at the next level, as well. I can think of more than one Detroit Lions team that could have used a guy like that on the roster.
