Up to the Minute:

Tony Lippett to be MSU’s first 2-way starter since 1968

EAST LANSING – Too much Tony Lippett at cornerback this season might have had an adverse effect on his football forte – the Michigan State senior leads the Big Ten with 1,071 receiving yards and 10 touchdown catches.

For the rest of the season, though, MSU is going to take advantage of all Lippett has to offer. He is scheduled to start at both receiver and cornerback Saturday at Penn State, making him MSU’s first two-way starter since All-America receiver/defensive back Allen Brenner in 1968.

“I’ll go back to when I was at Ohio State and I was the defensive coordinator,” MSU coach Mark Dantonio said of a stint from 2001-03. “We were using Chris Gamble on both sides of the ball and he was playing over 100 plays in three straight games. So I mean, it was pretty amazing what he was able to accomplish. That was because we pushed the issue there, and I think issue can be pushed at if you have the right person with the right mentality. I think Lippett has that mentality.” - Read more at Freep.com
