ARLINGTON, Texas — It’s difficult to completely explain the extent to which Michigan State altered the vibe of its entire season Thursday with one gritty quarter of improbable football.

The Spartans’ were staring at a deflating licking, at the end of week of questions hinting at their demise — their renowned defensive coordinator leaving, their rival hiring a celebrated head coach.
