This is the last in a 50-day summer series counting down the top players in Michigan State football history, as I see them. No. 1 – George Webster

Rover, 1964-66, Anderson, S.C.

The skinny: Michigan State’s mid-1960s defenses were full of personality, interesting story lines and legendary players. But George Webster, more than anything, is why the Spartans of that era won so often. Webster didn’t play one position — he’d line up at safety, linebacker, sometimes defensive end, keeping offenses guessing and ill-prepared. He was a two-time consensus All-American, with the speed to chase down backs and the power to deliver trauma like a middle linebacker, all in a 6-foot-4, 218-pound frame.

As a senior in 1966, he tallied 93 tackles, including 10 for loss and was named MSU’s MVP. A year earlier, the Webster-led Spartans held Michigan, Ohio State and Notre Dame to a combined negative-85 yards rushing. – Read more at
