MSU DB preview: Questions at CB, but plenty of talent returns

Michigan State is scheduled to report for preseason camp Aug. 7, four weeks before the Sept. 4 opener at Western Michigan. This is the ninth in a series of breakdowns of each positiongroup before camp begins for an expected preseason top-10 team.

Today: Defensive backs

Last season: The loss of Thorpe Award-winning cornerback Darqueze Dennard from MSU’s Rose Bowl championship team proved to be a big deal, as did the departure of fellow senior safety Isaiah Lewis. The Spartans were not able to replace what they did for the secondary, even with one of the best cornerbacks in the nation in Trae Waynes patrolling the field. Waynes and others made mistakes in an early-season loss at Oregon, and starting corner Darian Hicks was the main victim in MSU’s home loss to Ohio State. Everyone took a beating against Baylor. But safeties Kurtis Drummond and RJ Williamson recovered from early-season mistakes to play better late, and Tony Lippett provided a spark after replacing Hicks at the corner opposite Waynes.
