EAST LANSING – Back in the 1990s, Mike Tressel and Harlon Barnett had big life plans — Tressel a mathematics major intending to use that expertise in business, Barnett a recently retired NFL player starting on his broadcast career as a radio sideline reporter at Michigan State.
“I was a big-time homer,” Barnett said of his work in the 1998 and 1999 seasons, always the first to grab MSU head coach Nick Saban for an interview after games.
But Barnett also was coaching high school ball back in his native Cincinnati, and that pull grew stronger by the year. Late in his career as a standout defensive back and wrestler at Cornell (Iowa) College, Tressel realized his strength — he got a perfect score on the math portion of his SAT — was not his passion. – Read more at Freep.com
