Defense wins, tailbacks impress in MSU scrimmage

EAST LANSING – The Michigan State football team held its first scrimmage of preseason camp Saturday, and as usual it was closed to media and fans.

Quite unusually, it was not accompanied by released statistics — for the first time in Mark Dantonio’s nine preseasons with the Spartans, MSU released his comments only in regard to a scrimmage.

But here’s what is known about the 180-play event at Spartan Stadium: The defense won 30-14 (MSU uses a modified scoring system, awarding points for a variety of play) to earn the green jerseys in practice until the next scrimmage in a week.
