MSU’s Bubba Smith named 75th anniversary All-American by Football Writers Association of America

Bubba Smith (#95) chases Notre Dame QB, Terry Hanratty, in their epic 1966 matchup at Spartan Stadium.

Late, legendary Michigan State defensive end Bubba Smith was named to the Football Writers Association of America 75th Anniversary All-America team, the organization announced today.

Smith, who starred at MSU from 1964-66, spearheading a national title in 1965 and No. 2 final ranking in 1966, was a third-team selection. The FWAA, founded in 1941, has been picking an All-America team since 1944, making it the second-longest continuously selected team in major college football.

Smith was a first-team All-American by nine different selectors as a senior, and he was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1967 NFL draft, going to the Baltimore Colts. He passed away in 2011 at age 66. – Read more at
