EAST LANSING – Harlon Barnett has been around plenty of accomplished coaches, two at once in his final two seasons as a defensive back with the Cleveland Browns (1991-92) – Bill Belichick was the head coach, Nick Saban the defensive coordinator.
“It was a barrel of laughs all the time with coach Belichick and coach Saban, believe me,” Barnett joked today of a pair of famed curmudgeons. “But it was a lot fun and they are great coaches as they have proven themselves to be. They totally understand the game and get the best out of their players.”
And on Friday when No. 5 Michigan State opens the season at Western Michigan, Barnett will take another big step in his own coaching career. It’s his game debut as MSU’s co-defensive coordinator (sharing those duties with Mike Tressel), and he will be calling the defensive plays from the coaching box. – Read more at Freep.com
